DIY: Magazine Coasters

28 Oct

It’s Friday! Woo hoo!! What is the first thing you want to do on a Friday after a hard week of work? Well… for many (including myself) one of the first things that is done is to enjoy a nice adult beverage. And where are you going to put those drinks?? Here! DIY Magazine Coasters!

After seeing so many cute bowels, boxes, and other items that stores are selling made from old magazines, I thought I’d put my old mags to good use. Here’s what you need:

  • Colorful magazine pages
  • Hot glue gun and glue stick
  • Pen and scissors/paper cutter

Step 1: Pull out colorful pages from your magazine. I used a thin strip of cardstock and folded the pages around it to create even sized strips. Use the glue stick to glue these so they aren’t too thick.

Step 2: Take a pen or pencil and start rolling the strips around the pen. Use a small dob of hot glue to make the roll tight. Do this about 30 times (yuck I know). [If you want to do the other style of coaster, just start rolling and keep adding on to it. It’s pretty simple. ]

Step 3: Once you have them all rolled, begin gluing together with the hot glue in whatever shape you’d like. If you want something really specific, you may want to lay it out first before you start gluing.

Step 4: Since these are paper and absorb water, you may want to use a shellac to coat them so they won’t get ruined. I don’t know what kind… but if anyone knows let me know! For now mine will just sit on my pretty coffee table.

Cheers all!
